We are hosting a group of 20 students from Korea for the next several weeks. Their most recent assignment in the Business English class was to present their Dream Job! Let’s see how that went.

First, Mr Robert helped them prepare.

They all worked very hard, in class and at home.

Once the presentations began, they were all very attentive.

Looks like Bae Yu Mi wanted to work in a zoo!

Chun So Dam was interested in good looking account executives.

Like many others, Gwon Woo Jin was interested in Hotels

Han Hye Ji talked about restaurants and Food service.

Joo Chang Bum wants to be a banker.

Nam Sun Young was more interested in web design.

There were many other presentations and all were very professionally done.

Great Job Everyone!!

O Level students get ready for exams

The O Level students are working hard to get ready for the Singapore exams in October. Part of the English exam involves narrative writing. Here is an example of the quality of this writing from one of Ms Jane’s students, Aris Li Lu.

Write about an event that changed your life for the better.

Written by Aris Li Lu

“You have advanced lung cancer. The chance of a successful operation is very slim, almost non-existent.” I blundered out of the consultation room with downcast eyes as the doctor’s sentence lingered in my mind. I tore the report and threw it on the ground. Hiding my face, I wept, not believing such a terrible thing could have happened to me.

After my mother passed away, I became an anti-social person. My mother died due to our family not having extra money to support her medical fees. To take my revenge on this society, I had reached the notorious level typical of seasoned gangsters and was involved in all types of crimes such as robbery, theft and fighting. That was until yesterday. My cousin, who is the only relative in contact with me, sent me for a medical examination and told me to get a checkup. Then I received this report.

I walked aimlessly on the street feeling that this world is strange and cruel to me. In my eyes, the whole world is grey and black. Suddenly, I saw an elderly woman struggling to drag a box and I gave her a hand, helping her home. She thanked me and her eyes filled my heart like the brightness of the moonlight. At that moment, I knew what I could do with the rest of my life.

I devoted my days to being a volunteer in the nursing home and orphanage. At night, I found a part-time job which did not pay well, but I enjoyed it as this was my first job. Spending my time at these places, I acknowledged that this world is not as bad as I thought. Everyone was trying their best to live in this world, even these elderly people and children who were abandoned by their parents. From them, I learnt a lot.

One week later, dusk fell. I was sitting on the beach watching the sunset. The setting sun cast a deep red glow over the city. My heart had never been peaceful, but now I know the essence of life. I felt that my previous life was a failure and meaningless. If I had one more life, I would not live it like my previous way of life. Suddenly, my phone chimed, “Hello, this is Dr Tan. I’m calling to inform that you haven’t got lung cancer. I am terribly sorry as your report was mixed up with another patient’s …” I hung up the phone and looked at the sunset far away with a smile.

5 years later, as a phenomenally successful businessman, I am sitting in my easy chair. Recalling my previous life, I think getting ‘cancer’ was the best thing that ever happened to me. It really changed my life for the better.

Great work and good luck!

Another Concert by the Elementary Class

Last month, Mr Edward and his Elementary class performed the old Brian Hyland hit, Sealed With a Kiss. Students from other classes were invited to watch. In addition to the regular class, there were eight Korean students here on a special program who joined and performed.
First, the song was introduced by Greg.

Mr Edward asked for silence so the performance could begin.

Vicky and Henry acted out the song as the rest of the class sang.

The class received a standing ovation and even performed an encore! Great stuff!

AAC Appreciation Dinner

On Monday night, our Chairman, Mr Heng was gracious enough to host an appreciation dinner for all of the teachers and staff of the school. The dinner was to celebrate the awarding of Edutrust Certification for a period of 4 years.

The 8 course dinner at Roland’s Restaurant was delicious and the karaoke after dinner was fun. Here are a few shots taken with Ms Elaine’s iphone. (click to enlarge)
Before dinner was served, Mr Heng said a few words.

Mr Heng also proved to be an accomplished server.

Once dinner was over, it was time for some songs. Mr Roland and Mr Francis went first with their version of “Hey Jude”

Next up, the duet of Ms Pauline and Ms Cynthia gave us “Never Been to Me”

The evening would not have been complete without a good Chinese Ballad. Mr Michael Liew and Chairman Heng joined forces to meet the challenge.

Not to be outdone, Mr Brian serenaded a few of the ladies with the old Elvis love song “Are You Lonesome Tonight”. At least Dr Teo (foreground left) seemed to like it.

Finally, we all got together for a nice group picture.

Once again, a warm thank you to Chairman Heng for hosting this great event and to Ms Elaine for the memorable pictures.

Elementary Pays its Respects

March 11 was the anniversary of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami that affected so many in that beautiful country. Ms Christine’s class decided to show their support by writing out wishes for the Japanese people and presenting them to the class’s Japanese student, Makoto Ohara. They then sang a Japanese song, Furnsato (my hometown) and Makoto translated. One website was so impressed that it posted the wishes.

It was a wonderful idea and Makoto appreciated it very much. Nice work class!

Mr Edward leads the Choir

One way that Mr Edward’s Foundation class practice their pronunciation is by learning and singing English songs. Here they are trying out “Lemon Tree”.

I can’t put that file type on WordPress but you can watch it on YouTube here.

IELTS Speaking Practice

A very common topic during an IELTS speaking test is the student’s home town. The examiner may ask where the student is from and to describe the town or city. Mr Dwayne used this unique method to help the students with descriptive vocabulary. He had each student first draw their hometown, then describe it.
Yang Qiarong hails from Fujian.

Gong Fengzun comes from a town called Dalian.

And here is Yumi Ando describing Tokyo.

It’s not always easy making a course like IELTS fun. Looks like Mr Dwayne found a way!
